Thus to be independent of public opinion is the first formal condition of achieving anything great or rational whether in life or in science. Great achievement is assured, however, of subsequent recognition and grateful acceptance by public opinion, which in due course will make it one of its own prejudices.
Da sie in ihr nicht den Maßstab der Unterscheidung noch die Fähigkeit hat, die substantielle Seite zum bestimmten Wissen in sich heraufzuheben, so ist die Unabhängigkeit von ihr die erste formelle Bedingung zu etwas Großem und Vernünftigem (in der Wirklichkeit wie in der Wissenschaft). Dieses kann seinerseits sicher sein, daß sie es sich in der Folge gefallen lassen, aner- kennen und es zu einem ihrer Vorurteile machen werde.
